Global TESOL College Teaching Practicum
Outline of Duties and Hours
Minimum Number of Required Hours: 20 hours

Suggested Hours & Practicum Duty

5 hours Observation
The observation portion of the practicum is the first step for all student-teachers. During these five hours, the student-teacher will become more familiar with the students, classroom and classroom teacher. The student-teacher is only to observe the class and take notes. They are not to assist or teach in any way, as he or she is to be gaining insight into how the class is organized. The student-teacher needs to concentrate on the timing, the lesson and the delivery of the lesson as well as noting students strengths and weaknesses.

5 hours Assisting
After the observation hours have been completed, the student-teacher is now ready to be more involved with the students and with the planning of the classroom. During these hours the student-teacher will be assisting in both the administration of the lesson as well as assisting the students on a one to one basis during the class.

For the administration portion of the assistance, the student-teacher can help with the lesson planning along side of the classroom teacher. The student-teacher can also assist by creating one activity to use in a lesson that relates to the subject or theme of that lesson, but may not teach that activity. The student-teacher may also assist students one on one, the practicum teacher during individual work time during the lesson. The student-teacher may not interrupt lessons to assist students.

5 hours Supervised or Team Teaching
Now that the student-teacher has a solid basis of how the lessons are planned and administered, the student-teacher is now ready to teach a portion of the lesson. The practicum student will also be responsible for planning his/her portion and showing this to their classroom teacher before teaching what they have planned.

The student-teacher not responsible for teaching the whole lesson, only half or part of the lesson, dependent upon the teacher-supervisor and student-teacher’s personal agreement. The 5 hours includes both the teaching done by the practicum student and the observation of the teacher-supervisor’s teaching during the same class.

5 hours Solo Teaching

The final portion of the practicum is to have the student-teacher plan and teach full lessons for a total of 5 class hours. The student-teacher is to plan lessons that will continue with the curriculum, themes and/or lessons being taught by the teacher-supervisor.

The student-teacher will plan the lessons at least a day in advance in order to give the classroom teacher time to review what has been planned. The teacher-supervisor and the student-teacher will discuss the lessons and make any changes necessary. The student- teacher will then teach that same lesson while the teacher-supervisor observes and evaluates each lesson. The evaluations are provided in the Global TESOL College Practicum manual.
